Quirky, unexpected, and instantly memorable, the Suitcase Museum is conceived as a destination for visitors and locals alike. Blending history, travel, technology, and creativity, it will be a flexible cultural space that supports a wide range of community-driven programs and conversations.

A BOLD IDEA THAT FITS DENVER PERFECTLY
At first glance, a museum devoted to suitcases might sound unconventional, maybe even a little strange. Yet that very unexpectedness is what gives the concept its strength. Among the many ideas explored so far, the Suitcase Museum stands out as the most viable and the most distinctive. With a playful yet meaningful connection to Denver’s past, it has the potential to become a true Denver institution. Our 501(c)(3) process is underway, and we are ready to move this concept forward.

HISTORY IS AT THE HEART OF THIS MUSEUM
What does a suitcase have to do with Denver? Quite a lot, as it turns out. Denver is the birthplace of the modern suitcase. Founded in 1912 as the Shwayder Trunk Manufacturing Company, and later renamed Samsonite in the late 1940s, the company was headquartered in Denver until 2005. As the home of this global innovation, Denver is the natural place to celebrate, honor and explore the suitcase’s legacy as a cultural icon. The Suitcase Museum will serve as a living monument to this history, innovation, design and curiosity.

THE SUITCASE AS A SYMBOL OF MODERN LIFE
Few objects define modern travel as clearly as the suitcase. Beyond its practical function, it carries deep cultural meaning. It represents movement, memory, identity and possibility. The Suitcase Museum will use its collection to examine both the tangible and the abstract: Form and function, personal stories and shared histories, the obvious and the unexpected. In doing so, it will invite visitors to see a familiar object in entirely new and interesting ways.
